This creamy chipotle ranch sauce has a kick of heat and is the perfect sauce or dip for tacos, sandwiches, salads, vegetables, fries, and more! It only takes a few minutes to make and fewer calories and fat compared to traditional recipes.
I’m obsessed with this chipotle ranch sauce. I’ve been making it regularly because it’s great on everything! I’ve used it as a sauce for tacos and burgers, a dip with chips and homemade fries, and even as a dressing for a veggie grain bowl. It adds so much flavor to any dish.
Homemade vs store bought
I love making homemade sauces, dressings, and condiments because they are easy to put together and much healthier than store-bought varieties. The best part is you get to control the ingredients and avoid any preservatives, additives, additional sugar, or salt. After trying this sauce I’m sure you’ll agree, homemade just tastes better!
What ingredients are in chipotle ranch sauce?
- Plain Greek yogurt
- Chipotle in adobo
- Ranch dressing
- Lime juice
- Honey
- Fresh cilantro
In this recipe I balance the heat of the chipotle in adobo peppers with the sweetness from honey, tang from lime juice, and richness of the Greek yogurt.
I’ve replaced the usual mayo with plain Greek yogurt for a lighter version of the traditional chipotle aioli sauce. This chipotle ranch sauce also has less fat and calories, plus additional vitamins and protein from the Greek yogurt. Honestly, I can’t even tell the difference because it’s so creamy and addictive.
What makes this sauce so great?
Canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce! Chipotle peppers are dried, smoked jalapeños that are rehydrated and canned in adobo sauce. Adobo is a tangy, slightly sweet tomato sauce. Mixed together they have an amazing smoky, spicy flavor. If you’ve never used them, don’t worry, they’re easy to find in most grocery stores.
Some recipes use the individual peppers, and others just the adobo sauce. If you want less heat, scrape the seeds out of the peppers. Usually I puree the entire can and use a small amount of the sauce in this recipe because it’s super potent. I never finish an entire can, so I freeze the sauce in small containers for future use.
Spice level
This recipe is easily adapted to your spice tolerance. As written, the sauce is a little bit spicy, but balanced out from the sweetness of the honey. If you’re worried about it being too spicy, start with half of the amount of chipotle in adobo. You can always add more after tasting. Make it as spicy or mild as you would like!
How to Use Chipotle Sauce
So you’ve made the chipotle sauce, now what do you do with it? Like I said earlier, this sauce is good with everything! But here are some suggestions:
- Use as a sauce for tacos or burritos
- Spread it on a sandwich or wrap (breakfast sandwich would be yummy too!)
- Eat it with eggs
- Serve with vegetables
- Use as a condiment for any type of burger or veggie patty
- It’s great as a dipping sauce for fries (sweet potato, potato, tots, zucchini fries, and more)
- Dip chicken nuggets or grilled chicken
- Pairs well with any Mexican or southwest dish
- Delicious as a dip with chips….and so much more!
In addition, make it into a salad dressing. Add a little bit of lime juice or water to thin and you can drizzle it on salads or grain bowls for a punch of flavor!

*Pour the can of chipotle in adobo (both the peppers and the sauce) in a high speed blender and blend until smooth. Then measure out the amount you need for the recipe. I will usually place the leftover blended chipotle in adobo into a small container and freeze for later use. The sauce will thicken when refrigerated. Leave it on the counter before using or you can add more lime juice or water to get to desired consistency. I used Maries ranch dressing. I have also used Bolthouse Greek yogurt ranch dressing, which would be a healthier dressing option. Use your favorite ranch dressing or make your own. I use 2% plain Greek yogurt because I like the consistency and thickness. If you use a yogurt that is a thinner consistency you may want to omit the water or add it after blending the sauce, as needed to get desired consistency. I have made this with and without cilantro and they both come out delicious!
This chipotle ranch sauce is my absolute favorite to give any dish a kick of flavor and I hope it becomes your favorite as well!
